European fintech Mollie has completed its acquisition of GoCardless, the UK-based bank-to-bank payment organisation. Mollie announced the completion on 1 September.
Mollie was founded Amsterdam in 2004 and is now one of Europe’s leading payment platforms, with tools for accepting payments, managing funds, and supporting business growth. GoCardless was founded in 2011 and is best known for serving businesses that bill customers on a recurring basis, including SaaS companies, utilities, charities, insurers, and professional services. It is not a consumer banking app – it provides infrastructure that businesses integrate into their own billing and payment workflows.
Between them, the two companies are used by 350,000 businesses over more than 30 countries. GoCardless will continue to operate under its own name as ‘a Mollie’ company, highlighting the importance of its offering to the wider group.
Mollie CEO Koen Köppen said: “This is more than two companies coming together. It genuinely expands what our customers can do. Two complementary businesses, the same DNA, and a shared mission to make money management effortless. Our customers now have one financial partner scaling with their ambition.”
While the two companies were built on the same principles Mollie is grounded in Europe, with teams embedded in 12 cities across the European Economic Area (EEA). GoCardless’s customer base is more global, with an established presence in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Announced in December 2025, the completion of the acquisition creates one provider offering integrated card payments, local methods, and bank payments into a single solution, intended for large enterprises and SMEs alike.
The two organisations are in strong health financially as they enter their new world. Mollie achieved EBITDA profitability in 2024 and reported €147 million in net revenue in 2025, while GoCardless recorded its first EBITDA-positive quarter in summer 2025. This allows them to aim for a customer-first, phased integration. Existing customers of either company can expect no immediate changes to services, contacts or contracts.
Hiroki Takeuchi, co-founder and CEO of GoCardless, said: “We’re incredibly excited to join forces with Mollie. This deal brings together two highly complementary businesses that have built best-in-class products across Europe and beyond. By combining our expertise in card, bank and hyperlocal payments into one provider, we can better serve our customers, accelerate growth and raise the bar for the industry. It’s a win for European fintech and we’re confident that the new company will be greater than the sum of its parts.”
“Our commitment to our customers is simple: we will always put their needs first,” adds Köppen. “They now have a financial partner built to last. We are stronger together, and excited to shape the future of financial services for every business in Europe and beyond.”
