New research reveals that the UK was responsible for creating 15 new unicorns in 2026.
A unicorn is a startup marked at $1bn or more, and tends to be a business that is highly innovative and disruptive of existing markets.
The research, carried out by Tracxn Technologies, reveals more than 1.2 million startups in the United Kingdom, of which 102 have become unicorns. As of 3 September, 2026 has seen 15 startups ascend to unicorn status, 13 more than in 2025.
In global terms, the UK ranks 4th for total unicorn creation, behind India with 132, China at 250, and the United States with a staggering 1,234. Within the UK, London leads the way with 77 unicorns, followed by Cambridge and Bristol with four and two respectively.
FinTech is the most popular sector with 37 unicorns created, followed by enterprise apps at 36 and high tech on 26.
One notable trend is the rapid pace at which companies now achieve unicorn status. AI lab Odyssey was founded in 2023 and became a unicorn this year, while robotics firm Humanoid was founded a year later in 2024 but also achieved unicorn status this year. By contrast, it took BrewDog ten years from founding in 2007 to unicorn in 2017.
It comes as no surprise to see AI companies feature widely in the list. Business Cloud reports that AI companies in the UK raised $9.6bn (£7.2bn) in H1 2026, up 360 per cent from H1 2025 and 284 per cent from H2 2025.
